Job Title: Tax Supervisor

Reports To: Manager(s), Partner(s)

Summary: The Tax Supervisor is responsible for the review and preparation of income tax workpapers to ensure compliance with federal and state tax laws. The Tax Supervisor will assist and provide support to Tax Managers and Partners.  Takes an increasing role in the firm’s business and practice development activities.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Mentor, supervise and train staff and seniors through counsel, guidance and coaching; evaluate performance and participate in individuals’ performance reviews.
  • Supervise tax engagements and assist in providing innovative tax planning, consulting, and compliance services to clients
  • Preparation of complex  federal and multi-state  individual, trust, partnership, and S & C Corporation income tax returns
  • Review income tax returns prepared by staff and make recommendations on return preparation regarding accuracy and tax saving opportunities
  • Proficient at Federal and state tax research and manage IRS and State tax notices to resolution
  • Ability to prioritize and manage client engagements from start to finish, which includes planning, executing, directing, managing to budget and communicating status with manager/partner
  • Delegate work as appropriate and hold staff and seniors accountable for the work that has been delegated to them
  • Develop effective and proactive relationships with clients to provide superior client service
  • Provide recommendations for business and process improvements based upon the technical knowledge gained relative to the client’s operations, processes, and business objectives
  • Manage client accounts including billing and various client matters
  • Maintain excellent working relationships with staff/team members of the firm by effectively motivating, utilizing, training and developing staff
  • Demonstrate competency in technical skills, work quality and application of professional and firm standards
  • Proficient in tax software including ProSystem fx Engagement, fixed assets and tax and XCM  
  • Responsible to develop and maintain strong client relationship on all assigned clients through quality and timely service and communication.  This responsibility includes but is not limited to the following tasks:
    • PBC Letter Delivered Timely
    • Engagement Letters Delivered
    • Year-end planning
    • Call or reminder letters on all estimated tax payments
    • Year-end projection call on all clients that have or may have the need for projections.
    • Communication of open items and managing to completion
  • Perform self-reviews to correct errors
  • Be a Team player by helping where you can, staying engaged with the team through project completion
  • Continually work to increase quality of work through asking questions and being receptive to review notes and feedback
  • Develop an thorough understanding of Firm policies, processes, and procedures
  • Regular and predictable attendance
  • Work 1,400 to 1,600 chargeable hours per year and 2,200 to 2,400 total hours per year including paid holidays and vacation to meet revenue goals set by the Tax Service Line Leader

Personal and Professional Development:

  • Invest in professional development through active participation in training sessions and networking events both internally and externally
  • Work with Managers/Partners to identify and maintain strategic goals of the department and firm
  • Recognize routine client problems and verbally communicate them to client or supervisor as appropriate
  • Recognize areas where the firm can provide services of value to the client and inform the manager or supervisor about such opportunities.
  • Attend CPE programs, as well as internal training, that enhances your education and focuses on more complex areas of tax law
  • Attend networking events as well as professional training seminars
  • Gain some specialty skills relating to a segment of the practice or particular industry
  • Develop an understanding of the rules, requirements, code of conduct and standards of the AICPA, and the authoritative requirements of Circular 230 and the Board of Accountancy
  • Promote RMC core values and represent firm in a positive light
  • Set and achieve career goals to develop personally as well as professionally

Qualifications:

  • Attained Bachelor’s degree from four-year College or university or higher degree preferred
  • CPA license, licensed attorney or significant progress working toward CPA licensure
  • Four to seven years related experience and / or training
  • Must be able to communicate and function in an interdisciplinary team
  • Must be able to read, write, speak, and understand the English language
  • Ability to show strong leadership and mentoring capabilities
  • Strong analytical, written and verbal communication skills
  • Strong technical skills in accounting, tax preparation and review

Supervisory Responsibilities: 
Manages Senior Tax Associates and Tax Associates. Carries out supervisory responsibilities in accordance with the organization's policies and applicable laws.
